Interview with the developer of Mosquitoes

We recently had the opportunity to interview the developer behind Makayama. Makayama has the created several successful games for the App Store and today we’ll be focusing on their innovative app,  Mosquitoes (augmented reality game).

In Mosquitoes you get to shoot the buzzing insects as you watch them fly around your surroundings via your iPhone’s camera. The game employs the device’s compass and accelerometer to create an amazingly realistic effect. There are two different game modes. One mode gives you two minutes in which to shoot as many mosquitoes as you can. The second mode gives you 10 bullets to shoot 10 mosquitoes in a timed round.  Mosquitoes is a blast to play and currently priced at $.99 in the App Store.

Now that we’ve discussed the application, let’s move on to our interview with Vincent from Makayama.

1) How did you come to your decision of developing an ‘augmented reality’ application?

We were brainstorming on new game ideas and came  up with this idea of
shooting flying objects around you. Mosquitoes was developed from that. The AR-technology allowed this to be done technically.

2) What is your opinion of the capability of the iPhone’s hardware in terms of handling augmented reality applications?

The iPhone is perfectly capable of handling AR in realtime, only the SDK (developer tool) is too limited now. Apple is not allowing the deep level access which you need to do ‘real’ augmented reality. For example, we can’t access raw, streaming camera data. A wish for 2010.

3) Are you optimistic about the future of augmented reality on mobile devices and can you predict any possible future applications for this technology?

You will see lots more AR on phones. Gaming will be a huge growth opportunity, but also location based apps. However, the risk of AR being overhyped is big. Apps like Layar could easily become the next Second Life: much talked about but no one really uses it.

4) Do you plan to develop another augmented reality application?

Yes, we’re working on a couple of AR games, scheduled to come out in Q1, 2010

Our thanks to Vincent and the team at Makayama for giving us their time and we look forward to seeing their next augmented reality title.

Augmented ID iPhone Application

The Astonishing Tribe, or TAT, has developed an incredible application that looks futuristic when you see it in action. Augmented ID allows you to point your phone at someone’s face and automatically discover information about them (Facebook, Twitter, their business card, a photograph, and whatever other information they want to share) as long as they, of course, are Augmented ID users. This app isn’t yet available but we will let you know of any developments.

Sneakpeak – Mt. Social iPhone App

While not ready for commercial release, the team behind the Mt. Social augmented reality app has truly done something special. Their app uses facial and text recognition to pick faces out of a yearbook and display relevant information around them. This seems to be an excellent use of this technology and we hope to see it in the App Store some time soon.

via scattertree.com

We were given a quick demo of this awesome app called Mt. Social. It apparently uses a combination of facial and text recognition technology to identify people in yearbooks. You simply use your iPhone’s camera and the app displays an augmented reality image of 3-D tags or walls above certain people. The blue bits show personal info such as the number of kids, their profession (with dollar signs representing salary), their relationship status, and where they’re living. There is also a Facebook logo that, when clicked, takes you to their public Facebook page. We’ve been told that this demo is purely a test – the people are real but the data behind the app is fictional

Hands-on with Sun Seeker 3D Augmented Reality Viewer Review

We recently had some hands-on time with an intriguing new augmented reality application that is available in the App Store.

Sun Seeker 3D Augmented Reality Viewer is an application for showing the solar path, its hour intervals, its winter and summer solstice paths, rise and set times and more.  When you first launch the app you are presented with a top down compass view showing the sun’s path for that particular day. It uses the 3GS’s internal compass to display the information accurately as you rotate the device. You can also see the sun’s path for any day by pressing the ‘set date’ button. To initiate the augmented reality viewer you press the camera button in the lower right corner. This starts the phone’s camera and nicely overlays the sun’s path over a ‘grid-like’ pattern. In addition to the sun’s path you can also see the elevation, azimuth, sun’s position throughout the day, and the direction of the sun’s current position.

Our conclusion is that this app is definitely worth a ‘buy’. While $2.99 is a bit pricey, Sun Seeker 3D does an excellent job of displaying all the information you need in a tidy, elegant package.

Stella Artois Le Bar Guide

“Stella Artois Le Bar Guide is a pioneering new app from Stella Artois enabling you to select and navigate to the best bars.” Unfortunately the app didn’t seem to work in our state as it brought up a message saying there was a regional legal issue. This is a real shame as the app seems like it is a great use of augmented reality technology. Hopefully things will get sorted out sooner or later, but in the meantime, feel free to try it for yourself as the app is currently free in the App Store.

Fusing a real-world view of your immediate surroundings in augmented reality, with an extensive guide to the best bars around the world, this application is an essential aide to discovering a perfect bar near you.

Bar reviews and ratings make this app the perfect on-the-go guide for discerning bar goers. Beer connoisseurs around the world can now join Stella Artois’ global quest for perfection in beer experiences, finding and savouring the perfect Stella Artois – poured according to the time honoured pouring ritual and served in the iconic Chalice glass. Those seeking a perfect setting for people watching, a lively dance spot, or just a great place to meet with friends can quickly and easily select a bar according to their preferences – from New York to LA to London.

Compass Plus 3D Compass

Compass Plus 3D Compass is a new iPhone app that achieves a really cool implementation of displaying the compass. You can choose within the settings whether you want a hybrid, satellite, or map view, and the compass is overlayed over a google map of your location. There is also the ability to add ‘favorites’ and view them in relation to your current location. While not necessarily bringing anything new to the table, this app definitely looks good in action and is worthy of showing off to friends. At $.99 it is one of the better looking compass apps in the store.

Application description:

Application for 3D display of compass and map.

[ Functions ]
- Modify map scale and display format.
- Display latitude, longitude and altitude.
- Display general address for current location.
- Display movement trajectory.

iPhone in iPhone Augmented Reality

A video recently surfaced of a upcoming ‘promotional’ app from Ogmento.  The app has been developed “…to promote the iPhone launch by Orange Telecom Israel.” You apparently print out a picture of the Orange logo, launch the app on your iPhone and aim at the printout. The image appears on your screen, hovering above the Orange logo.

Point your iphone to an Orange logo and watch a virtual iPhone that appears hovering over the logo. Use finger gestures to turn the iphone around, zoom in or out – or even launch applications.

The technology looks great in action, and we can’t wait to see this used in more than just a ‘promotional’ way.  The app is not currently available in the App Store but we will let you know as soon as it is released.
