Nude X App Review

Nude X is the latest in a long line of apps claiming to allow you to ’see you friends naked!’ Unfortunately this doesn’t quite deliver and pales in comparison to Nude It, another app we’ve reviewed. In Nude X, rather than using face detection technology to overlay the ‘nude’ model on top of your subject, this app makes you resize and correctly place the model.

Already a huge success, thanks to you! Nude X shows your friends naked!
Augmented reality is wonderful… You can now transform your iPhone into a nude scanner thanks to this exceptional technology.

It is very simple to use!
Launch the application and point your iPhone towards your victim. Touch the button to see your victim nude using your iPhone’s camera.

Pandemica App Review

Pandemica is a new augmented reality shooter from XMG Studio Inc. The game offers both single player and multiplayer modes and includes various enemies and weapon power-ups. Once you start the game you are shown instructions explaining that you should hold the device upright and tap the screen to shoot your weapon. The enemies instantly start coming from the horizon, and generally in front of you so you don’t wind up spinning in circles. As you progress you unlock better weapons and the missions get harder. The game also includes OpenFeint integration with achievements. Multi-player  mode is where there game really shines as you get to battle the enemy aliens with another friend. This game is very polished and looks great and plays great. We feel that it is well worth the $1.99 it is currently priced at in the App Store.

If you are a 3GS user this is an App you want – to show off the unique capabilities of this device.

Pandemica is XMG Studio’s 1st generation AR game (wait until you see what we have next) and an intense, arcade-style shooter. GeoChaser App Review

GeoChaser is a new augmented reality app that will have you playing a first person shooter in the great outdoors.  When you first launch the app you are presented with three options: Create game, join game, and statistics. To start a game with friends is as simple as it gets. When you are in a game you can hold the device upright for augmented reality mode, and flat for map mode. The transition between the two is quick and perfect. Overall we felt it was a great implementation of a fun idea and well worth the $2.99.

GeoChaser is the first multiplayer first person shooter played in the real world.  Go geochasing friends and strangers with your iPhone. Be fast, be quick. Everyone could be an enemy. And always remember that every chaser will also get chased.  Play it inconspicuous like an agent, hidden like a ninja or offensive like a pirate.
GeoChaser uses GPS to locate you and your opponents. Your positions are displayed on a map. Switch to combat mode when you are close to an enemy and shoot a picture with the camera. The fastest shooter is the winner.
Augmented Reality helps you locate your opponents.  Tell your iPhone friends and go geochasing. There can be only one winner and the world is your playground.

Cheap Gas Augmented Reality App Review

We have seen augmented reality apps that cover many different purposes, but have yet to see one that locates cheap, local gas.  Cheap Gas! is now officially owned by GasBuddy.com and the latest version of the app is nearly perfect. Upon first launch you are asked permission to use the GPS to locate your current position. Within a second or two you are presented with a list of gas stations, sorted by distance or price, and showing the last recorded price and the time that record was made.  Pressing on an entry brings up additional information including the prices for Plus, Premium and Diesel and a map button. You can even add your own station reports. The ‘Cyborg’ button engages augmented reality mode where you get a compass arrow, and the listings displayed over-top of the camera view.

We found that the app performed quite well, our only gripe was with the augmented reality mode. Compared to Layar or Acrossair Augmented Reality Browser, the tracking of the waypoints is rather choppy. When it comes to finding the closest cheap gas, you can’t do better than Cheap Gas!

Interview with Developer of LocFinder App

LocFinder is an augmented reality app that offers all of the navigation features you will need and we’re thankful that developer Thomas Seifert took some time to answer our questions regarding augmented reality technology on the iPhone.  First let’s take a look at LocFinder.

The app’s home screen shows you a compass arrow pointing to your current destination, a rotating globe with a pin at your destination, and other information including the latitude and longitude, and distance. You can choose a destination from your own ‘personal list’ or from the list of famous places all around the world. Pressing on the compass engages augmented reality mode. In AR mode you see a really cool compass that seems to encircle you and your destination is highlighted in red. You can also bring up an arrow to point the way.

Other features from the description:

-offers path recording and following (forwards and backwards), allows listening to your music while recording or following a path, shows you the path metrics: altitude profile, average speed, elapsed time, total distance and altitude difference. Works with Google Earth – you can include and exclude paths or locations to/from Google Earth

We found that this app not only worked great, but looked great too. There is a high level of polish on everything from the home screen to augmented reality mode. Selecting a new destination is easy, and you always have 1 click access to more information about a position via Wikipedia. LocFinder is currently $1.99 in the App Store and there is a free, lite version for you to try.

Now for our interview with developer Thomas Seifert…

1) How did you come to your decision of developing an ‘augmented reality’ application?
It is an interesting experience to handle an augmented reality application.

2) What is your opinion of the capability of the iPhone’s hardware in terms of handling augmented reality applications?
Real time image recognition is not possible with the current iPhone 3GS. Therefore only the kind of info /graphic overblending like I did is possible. Did you see the video of augmented reality on a 2D barcode on the iPhone? It is quite slow.

3) Are you optimistic about the future of augmented reality on mobile devices and can you predict any possible future applications for this technology?
Augmented reality has definitly a future on mobile devices with more powerful processors. A possible application could be  a ghost hunter game. Or maybe you look through your mobile on a TV and the mobile gets automatically connected to that TV and you can control it.

4) Do you plan to develop another augmented reality application?
I have some ideas regarding a board game for the iPhone where I use augmented reality.

We want to thank Thomas for taking the time to answer our questions and hope that LocFinder continues to be a big success.

Sky Seige App Review

The first thing we want to say about the new app Sky Seige from Simbiotics Ltd is “Wow!” Right off the bat the App Store description hints at the fact that you will “Stand up and fight! Literally!!” and that the battle will be “360 degrees in every direction!” The is undeniably true as the action is fast and frantic, and will have you spinning.

When you first launch the app you are presented with  ‘Go’,  ‘Settings’ and  ‘Guide’ buttons. Inside the settings you can choose your difficulty level and filtering. The guide explains how to play the game, and what the various on-screen elements indicate such as the weapon selector, ammunition levels, zooming etc. After pressing the  go button your rocket launcher comes up in  first person shooter style and as you turn your iPhone around, you can see inside the virtual world which consists of a grassy floor and blue cloudy sky. The enemies including helicopters and blimps start flying at you from every angle and it is your job to shoot them down. It’s actually quite thrilling as the helicopters buzz past you with guns blazing as you spin around to shoot them with a rocket! You can choose ‘augmented reality’ mode and the camera view is used as the background making for quite an immersive gaming experience! There is much to this game that we haven’t covered such as ammo crates at your feet for reloading and much more. During our review we found Sky Seige to be an insanely fun augmented reality experience and it comes with our highest recommendation. Don’t hesitate to pick this one up today.
